Sanctuaries and Living Rooms: a ritual closing ceremony for Marek Štěpán’s exhibition is to take place in Ostrava
The exhibition ‘Sanctuaries and Living Rooms’ (Svatostánky a obýváky), which
showcases the architectural work of Marek Štěpán at the MAPPA space in Ostrava,
is drawing to a close. On Saturday 3 October 2026, a ceremonial closing event
will take place, featuring a supporting programme and visits to selected buildings.

The programme will offer an opportunity to explore Marek
Štěpán’s work not only through the models, photographs and the architect’s own
notes on display, but also directly within the spaces of both completed and
emerging architectural projects.
Participants will visit the newly emerging bishop’s tomb and
the chapel of adoration in the Cathedral of the Divine Saviour. The programme
will also include a tour of the concrete villa ‘V Břízkách’. The ceremonial
closing of the exhibition will be complemented by a culinary surprise.

Between sacred and residential space
The exhibition presents the work of Marek Štěpán, architect
and lecturer at FA BUT, as
a carefully conceived whole in which the spiritual and secular dimensions of
architecture intertwine. It offers not merely a showcase of individual
buildings, but above all an insight into the way the architect conceives of
space, light, materials and people.
Marek Štěpán’s work has long been characterised by an
endeavour to transcend the boundaries between sacred and residential spaces. In
his projects, he seeks both the quality of everyday life and a deeper
significance in architecture. The ruins of St Catherine’s Church in
Ostrava-Hrabová proved to be a significant source of inspiration for him. It
was here that the principles which continue to permeate his work to this day
took shape: the body as a haptic measure of the human being, light as a medium
that breathes life into space, and silence as a condition for inner order.

From apartment blocks to churches and chapels
The exhibition presents a diverse range of building types,
from apartment blocks to churches and chapels. Its centrepiece is a model of
the Malé Lauby housing complex, which demonstrates how the focus and depth
typical of sacred architecture can also be transferred to contemporary urban
housing. The exhibition includes large-format photographs arranged as spatial
collages inspired by the work of Jiří Kolář, alongside Marek Štěpán’s personal
notes on individual projects.
The exhibition remains open at MAPPA Za výlohou, Nádražní
17, Ostrava, until 10 October 2026, on weekdays from 2 pm to 6 pm.
