Two FA BUT Studios at the Landscape Festival: Student Visions and Interventions for Hradec Králové
On Wednesday, 10 June 2026, a joint exhibition of student
projects was ceremonially opened at the former Central Slaughterhouse complex
in Kydlinovská Street as part of the Landscape Festival. The Faculty of
Architecture at BUT is represented by two studios —
Palacký–Dokoupilová and Krejčová–Doležel — which bring two distinct yet
complementary perspectives on the city, public space, and its future form.
The Palacký–Dokoupilová Studio presents the Urban Living Lab
Hradec Králové projects, focused on the revitalization of the area between
Karla IV Avenue and Smetana Embankment, including Škroupova Street, Průmyslová
Street, and 5 May Square. The diploma projects offer comprehensive urban design
solutions and proposals for mixed-use buildings and public spaces in the
northeastern part of the site, while the bachelor projects focus on the
architectural design of a corner mixed-use building at the intersection of
Průmyslová and Škroupova streets. What unites these proposals is the ambition
to create a high-quality urban environment with an emphasis on blue-green
infrastructure and climate adaptation.
The Krejčová–Doležel Studio is participating in the festival
through a design&build installation developed in the spirit of circular
architecture, using recycled materials and in cooperation with a local re-use
centre. The students focused on the Benešovka area, a boulevard of luxury
housing from the 1980s whose public spaces now feel anonymous and remain
underused. The starting point of the proposal is the structure of an abandoned
fountain, which opens up ideas for the creation of a neighbourhood lido or
another form of shared space for the local community.
Both studios are united by an interest in the contemporary
urban environment, yet each approaches it from a different perspective: while
Palacký–Dokoupilová develops a longer-term urban and architectural vision for a
larger territory, Krejčová–Doležel works with a specific site, material, and a
temporary intervention in public space. Together, their projects demonstrate
the broad range of ways in which urban transformation can be conceived — from
strategic planning to experimental urban intervention.
“The opening of the exhibition of student works in the
former Central Slaughterhouse complex in Kydlinovská Street was truly
successful. In the coming months, the public will have the opportunity to visit
this remarkable industrial building together with the exhibition, including
guided tours. The slaughterhouse complex, one of Hradec Králové’s valuable
industrial heritage sites, has already overcome the worst of its condition, and
we are currently seeking a new use for it,” commented the Deputy Mayor of
Hradec Králové.
The joint presentation also includes works by students of the Achten–Pavlíček–Sýsová Studio from the Faculty of Architecture of CTU in Prague, focused on the revitalization of the municipal slaughterhouse complex. The exhibition thus creates a broader platform for bringing together different academic approaches to architecture, urbanism, and work with the urban landscape. It is open to the public for the duration of the Landscape Festival, which also includes a guided tour.
