Wednesday, June 4, 2025

Studio name: THE NEW CULTURE CLUB PRESENTS: ZA LUŽÁNKAMI: TERRAIN VAGUE
Tutors: Servie Boetzkes & Gabriel Pena
Time: from 9:30
Room: A411
Language of the presentation: English
Studio category: AT3-AE, SB3-AE

Annotation: The Za Lužánkami complex has a rich sports history. A long stage of development has turned this locality into an important sports center with an urban extension. It became a place that experienced great prosperity, but unfortunately also decline. It is currently in a state where the city of Brno is looking for a way to breathe life into this place and create an attractive part of the city. The big question is how? What urban plan, what conceptual idea, could make this area thrive again? As a group you will envision a new future for this area with a varied and multifaceted urban program. How can we learn from classical and modern examples to get to a shared urban proposal? And as an individual you will work on your own project, a building that is complying within the urban plan and is adding to the new DNA of the area. Can you bring your design and your architecture to the table that is giving this area the new identity it deserves?

Studio name: PACHER'S VILLA IN PODOLÍ - TRANSFORMATION
Tutors: Petra Žalmanová and Jiří Marek

.........................................................................................................

Studio name: COMPLICATED RELATIONSHIP
Tutor: Jan Hora
Time: from 13:00
Room:
Language of the presentation: Czech
Studio category: AT3 – city and place, SB5

Annotation: The work will deal with the reconstruction of the former Podhoran hotel in Bystřice pod Hostýnem. The former hotel is a typical example of the building culture of the 1970s-1980s. Although the building itself is not bad architecture, its scale and morphology go beyond the conventions of the historic city center. The building had a complex history, which leads to its contradictory public acceptance. At the same time, it is a pile of material that holds it together and hides a great potential for future adaptation. The aim of the work was to evaluate the potential for adapting the existing structure and for peace interventions. In extreme cases, its replacement is also permissible.

Studio title: MICROREGION OF ŠLAPANICKO
Tutors: Lýdia Šušlíková, Petr Buryška, Marek Hlavička
Time: 9:00 – 12:00
Room: 4th floor (building A)
Studio category: SBx Specialized master's studio
Language of the presentation: Czech

Annotation: The Ministry of Regional Development is currently preparing a long-awaited reform of the spatial planning system, and the Ministry of the Environment is also preparing a new landscape planning framework. In both cases, there is a clear desire to strengthen the importance of the micro-region as an important planning benchmark. The studio assignment follows the case of Šlapanice, as an example of a relatively small but exposed town in the Brno metropolitan area. In this context, the aim of the studio assignment is to examine the delineation of the potential micro-region of Šlapanicko from various perspectives and to define the themes and layers that could be effectively managed (landscape adaptation, transport, logistics, housing, amenities, etc.). The work requires an interdisciplinary character and therefore many professions will be consulted in the studio. An important part of the work will be carried out in the territory and the analysis of available data in collaboration with a team of experts. In the initial phase, a common vision of the territory will be established and then the sub-teams or individuals will divide the key tasks.
The speculative brief called for speculative answers.
.........................................................................................................

Studio name: KINETIC ARCHITECTURE
Tutors: Martin Kaftan
Time: 9:00 - 12:00
Room: B613
Language of the presentation: Czech
Studio category: AT3, AT5, SB4

Annotation: The studio is dedicated to integrating movement into architecture, both virtually and physically. Traditionally, movement in buildings has been marked by formal techniques such as deformation, juxtaposition, and repetition. However, new technologies – sensors, actuators, and robotics – are bringing real movement to bear, disrupting the static norms of architecture. The goal was to explore the aesthetic and functional potential of kinetic architecture and to connect historical concepts with innovative approaches. Students engage in theoretical analyses and practical experiments that culminate in a final project that will feature movement as a key design element. The studio encourages interdisciplinary collaboration across architecture, mechanics, electronics, and software, and explores new perspectives on responsive design.

Studio name: TINY HOUSE – HUGE PERSONALITY
Tutors: Vítězslav Nový
Time: from 09:00
Room: A211
Language of the presentation: Czech
Studio category: AT1 small house

Annotation:
Frugal living as an architectural challenge, where every inch of the space design serves its purpose – no waste, no excess. Here, modest living conditions are not a limitation, but a way of existence that questions only luxury itself. Clever solutions connect the functions of space so that the boundaries between what is real and what is merely the illusion of practicality begin to merge. It is a world where it can be bigger inside than outside – if you dare.
.........................................................................................................

Studio name: ŠUMPERÁK25
Tutors: Alex Bykov
Time: 13:00 - 16:00
Room: A209
Language of the presentation: English
Studio category: AT1 small house

Annotation: The project analysed the phenomenon, the history, the results of its realisation and the further individual transformations of the legendary single-family house Šumperák. We tried to use the example of Šumperák to create a new type of typical residential house, which could meet the modern requirements of building design and the needs of people in 2025.

Studio title: ME AND SPACE – MEMORIES VS. REALITY
Tutors: Adéla Šoborová & Anna Kotlabová
Time: 09:00 – 13:00
Room: A301
Studio category: AT1 Small House
Language of the presentation: Czech

Annotation: Come with us to explore space and find out how you perceive it, how you remember it and how you react to its changes. By interpreting the spaces we grew up in, we looked for patterns and developed schemes that we then reflected in our design. We designed a place for ourselves to use as we saw fit, but in relation to others. We created a reality of our personalities coexisting in a utilitarian architecture - a "generic" office building - that may not serve its original purpose in the future.

.........................................................................................................

Studio title: FROM NORTH TO SOUTH
Tutors: Michal Palaščák
Time: from 9:00
Room:
Studio category: AT3
Language of the presentation: Czech

Annotation: Transport infrastructure is often compared to the nervous system. Just as nerves transmit signals in the body, the transport network provides connections between different parts of the city. Your task is to connect the south and north of Brno with a new transport structure and find different scenarios for future development in the area. #Královo Pole (north), #center #Heršpice (south) #Brno metro #Brno S-bahn #support KAM.

Studio title: K67 - REVISION
Tutors: Jaroslav Sedlák
Time: from 11:00
Room: A304
Studio category: AT1- Small House,  AT3 - city and place
Language of the presentation: Czech

Annotation: The iconic design by Slovenian architect Saša J. Mächtig, produced over a period of 30 years, was originally conceived as a mobile and modular object. It quickly became a symbol of public space and modern times, fully reflecting the needs of the urban environment. Today, this kiosk is not only a cultural but also a historical icon that deserves a contemporary revision. The aim of this studio assignment was to innovatively explore and develop various mutations of the K67 kiosk that would respond to current needs and challenges. Four original pieces of the K67 kiosk were available, which served as a physical basis in a 1:1 scale for the designs.

Studio title: TALES ABOUT LAYERS
Tutors: Ludmila Jankovichová & Karolína Munková
Time: 13:00 – 17:00
Room: A301
Studio category: AT1 Small House
Language of the presentation: English

Annotation: How cake, fake or taking a break form our environment. Do you know how buildings are made? IDK. WTF! By asking questions and prototyping answers we will discover principles of layering and cladding. We will mold, fold, maintain, care and design small architectures made out of existing material.
.........................................................................................................

Studio title: DESIGN & MATERIAL REUSE
Tutors: Kristýna Smržová
Time: 13:00 – 16:00
Room: A214
Studio category: AT5 Free studio; AT1 Small House
Language of the presentation: Czech

Annotation: How can materials from structures that no longer serve their purpose be repurposed? How should we approach elements considered as waste? What recycling strategies can be applied in architecture and construction? Do you have ideas for reusing wind turbine blades or parts of airplanes? Would you like to work with old materials stored in your grandfather’s workshop? Are you interested in collaborating with a start-up focused on plastic recycling? Do you often see potential in discarded items? Do you dream of building a bunker from fiberglass bathtubs? Is reuse the future? We will explore these and many more questions. Assignments will be adjusted based on consultations with individual students or teams. Projects may focus on specific structural elements, small structures, strategies, or larger frameworks. There is also an option to create a 1:1 model using repurposed materials. The direction is up to you—reuse is the only requirement.

Studio title: PALACKÝ HILL - VISION FOR A NEW CITY QUARTER - video presentation
Tutors: Karel Havliš
Time: after 10:00 a.m.
Room: A316
Studio category: AT3- city and place
Language of the presentation: Czech

Annotation: Urban planning study for the area on the border of the Královo pole and Medlánky districts. The subject of the solution is the heterogeneous urban structure of a large locality, which is subject to the contemporary changes in city planning from the 1970s to the present. The space is characterised by the torso of the conceptual plan of the university campus of the BUT, the superior Hradecká road as a spatial barrier and only partly built-up area behind it. The aim of the solution is to find a vision for this space in the form of a new multifunctional urban district, to correct the urban disparity and "non-urbanity" of the entire area.
.........................................................................................................

Studio title:  RESTORATION OF HISTORIC TOWN CENTRES IN THE SOUTH BORDER REGION - video presentation
Tutors: Karel Havliš
Time: after 10:00 a.m.
Room: A316
Studio category: SB3
Language of the presentation: Czech

Annotation: Conceptual urbanistic-architectural studies of strategically important locations of historical towns in the South Moravian border region (Břeclav, Mikulov and Znojmo) focused on the restoration, revitalization and spatial cultivation of historical town centres. The subject of the studio work will be the design of an urban-architectural study, the aim of the solution will be to evaluate the potential of public spaces in historic centres with the possibilities of their reconstruction and completion. The semester work will be divided into several phases. The initial phase will be a team work devoted to updating information from the cities addressed, supplemented by information from discussions with city representatives. The comprehensive analysis will be complemented by research on the topics of restoration of historic cities from available sources, including research on previous successful FA student projects. The final phase will be directed towards the individual formulation of the main topic of the semester studio work in the chosen city. The individual study proposal can be a potential for the choice of the topic of the pre-diploma (or diploma) thesis.

Studio title: SPATIAL ACTIVISM: ADAPTATION OF UNENGAGED SPACES IN PODGORICA THROUGH INDEPENDENT CULTURAL PROGRAMS  - video presentation

Tutor: Radek Toman
Time: from 10:00
Room: A304
Studio category:
Language of the presentation: English

Annotation: The aim of this studio project was to explore the potential of underused urban spaces in Podgorica, Montenegro, for the development of independent cultural programs. The project investigates how abandoned or inadequately used spaces—particularly a former atomic blast shelter located in the city center—can be transformed into vibrant hubs for contemporary artistic production, collaboration, and public engagement.
Through architectural design and urban strategies, the work seeks to strengthen the presence and infrastructure of Podgorica’s independent cultural scene, which currently lacks systemic support and operates under challenging spatial conditions. The project includes spatial analysis, conceptual design, and a phased development scenario that envisions the revitalization of the blast shelter as a multifunctional cultural center.

Studio title: INCLUSIVE HOUSING STUDIO 5: NON-BOURGEOIS TENEMENT HOUSE IN ELBLAG
Tutors: Zuzanna Mielczarek, Kacper Kępiński
Time: 12:00  – 16:00
Room: B305
Studio category: AT3 City and Place; AT5; SBx Specialized masters studio
Language of the presentation: English

Annotation: The typology of a tenement house has a history of exploitation of the landlords over the working class tenants: financial profit from high rents paid for poor living conditions in overcrowded apartments. On the other hand, the dense fabric of the urban quarters often contributes to the most livable and vibrant areas of the city. The historical forms of residential buildings piqued the interest of architects during the period of system transformation in Poland in the 1980s and 1990s when the references to the bourgeois aspirations were linked to the emerging free housing market and privatization processes.
Such forms were part of late rebuilding of the Old Town in Elbląg, called "Retroversion" as it refered to the past in scale and planning, however embodying new aspirations at once.
Currently, real estate developers are capitalizing on the concept of urban quarters to propose highly efficient, over-densified complexes, driven by profit.
Students of IHS5 visited Elbląg and sought to rethink the traditional concept of a tenement house in light of the housing needs of 2025 with a focus on the social and communal aspects of urban living, new forms of tenancy and ownership.

Studio title: BEETWEEN INFRASTRUCTURE AND NATURE
Tutors: Szymon Rozwałka
Time: 13:00  – 16:00
Room: B615
Studio category: AT3 City and Place; AT5; SBx Specialized masters studio
Language of the presentation: first English (1 – 1.5 h) then a presentation in Czech will follow

Annotation: The theme “Between Infrastructure and Nature” represents a continuation of the multi-semester research within the Learning from Świnoujście cycle, which follows on from the previous assignment Space of Cyclical Change / Between Junkspace and Nature.

In the studio, we explored the relationship between large-scale infrastructure and the natural environment. Our goal was to seek new approaches to architecture that transcend the traditional dichotomy between the artificial and the natural, finding new strength and challenges in this tension. An important part of the assignment was to address large-scale infrastructure, which often remains beyond the reach of architects.

Annotation: The exhibition of student projects will present proposals for the revitalization of the embakment of the Kněžná River in Rychnov nad Kněžnou. The location with its historical and pitorexic character, flanked by a dominant castle and church, offers a number of unused areas and brownfields with potential for further development. Projects focus on creating a cultivated public space with a new promenade, improved access to the water, expanded parkland and pedestrian footbridges. Proposals also include upgrading commercial and transport-service zones, taking into account environmental friendliness and the needs of residents. The solutions were developed by students in collaboration with experts and through an on-site workshop.

Studio title: COMPLICATED RELATIONSHIP
Tutors: Ryan Manton + Jan Foretník
Time: from 17:00
Room: Bystřice pod Hostýnem
Studio category: AT3 - City and Place, SB2
Language of the presentation: English

Annotation: The project focused on the conversion of the former Podhoran Hotel in Bystřice pod Hostýnem. The building is a typical example of the construction culture of the 1970s and 1980s. Although the structure itself is not bad architecture, its scale and formal expression exceed the conventions of the town's historic center. The building has a complex history, which contributes to its ambivalent public reception. At the same time, it represents a substantial mass of material held together, offering significant potential for future adaptation. The assignment involves transforming this dead structure into a vibrant, multifunctional urban building. The new use of the space is also part of the task—ranging from urban housing and accommodation to services and administrative functions.
