Exhibition of Student Projects: School District in Rychnov nad Kněžnou
What might a school district look like where children,
parents, pedestrians, cyclists, and cars can move more safely and with better
visibility? Students from the Palacký–Dokoupilová studio at the Faculty of
Architecture, BUT, sought to answer this question.
The result is thirteen designs for public spaces around schools in Rychnov,
which are on display in the foyer of the cinema in Rychnov nad Kněžnou until
the end of summer break.
On Monday, June 22, 2026, the next phase of the development
of student living labs at the Faculty of Architecture at Brno University of
Technology was presented in the foyer of the cinema in Rychnov nad Kněžnou.
Over the past semester, students in the Palacký–Dokoupilová studio focused on
the theme “school neighborhoods in motion”—that is, public spaces used daily by
children, parents, teachers, and other city residents.
The exhibition features a total of thirteen student designs.
They focus on school streets, school squares, and other locations where
pedestrian traffic, bicycle traffic, and automobile traffic intersect. The
projects showcase various possibilities for calming these areas, making them
more user-friendly, and transforming them to be safer and more pleasant for
everyday use.
“The students are offering ideas on how to improve these
spaces, make them clearer and more accessible, and perhaps even restore missing
greenery and seating areas—ranging from minor interventions to permanent
changes,” says project leader Jiří Palacký.
Student Projects as Inspiration for Discussion
According to city officials, the students’ proposals can
serve as inspiration for further discussion about the traffic situation and the
design of public spaces in Rychnov nad Kněžnou. The issue of safe movement
around schools has long been a priority for the city.
The project also ties into broader considerations regarding
the city’s development. In June, Rychnov nad Kněžnou signed a memorandum of
cooperation with the Škoda Auto Foundation for the period 2026–2028, which
focuses, among other things, on supporting schools, leisure activities, cycling
infrastructure, public spaces, and places for socializing and community life.
Part of the studio’s work also involves collecting data on
traffic volume in the vicinity of schools. In June, measurements of automobile
traffic intensity were taken in front of Javornická Elementary School using a
Telraam S2 IoT sensor. This was preceded by measurements taken in front of
Masarykova Elementary School and F. M. Pelcl High School. The data collected
may serve as one of the bases for further decision-making regarding the future
design of school streets in the city.
The exhibition of student designs is on display in the foyer
of the movie theater in Rychnov nad Kněžnou until the end of summer vacation.
