Ing. arch. Marek Štěpán has been appointed associate professor in the field of Architecture and Urban Planning
The Faculty of Architecture at BUT has a new associate professor. During the ceremonial conferral of associate professorship titles at BUT, Ing. arch. Marek Štěpán, received his letter of appointment as the new associate professor in the field of Architecture and Urban Planning. His work will also be featured in the exhibition “Sanctuaries and Living Rooms,” which will be on view from June 12 to October 10, 2026, at the MAPPA Za výlohou space in Ostrava.
The festive atmosphere of this year’s doctoral and associate professor graduation ceremonies at BUT served as a reminder that academic recognition is the result of long-term professional, pedagogical, and creative work. During the graduation ceremony, the leadership of each faculty introduced the new associate professors, who subsequently received their appointment decrees and thus officially gained the right to use the title of associate professor. Among them was Assoc. Prof. Ing. arch. Marek Štěpán from the Faculty of Architecture at BUT.
Marek Štěpán’s appointment as associate professor is significant news not only for the Faculty of Architecture at BUT but also for the broader architectural community. His work has long demonstrated that architecture can be precise, sensitive, and deeply human at the same time—and that the quality of a space arises from a thoughtful relationship between people, materials, light, and the environment.
Congratulations, and we wish you many more successes in your teaching, creative, and professional work!
Invitation to the exhibition “Sanctuaries and Living Rooms”
Marek Štěpán’s architectural work is also explored in the exhibition Sanctuaries and Living Rooms, which presents his body of work as a cohesive conceptual world where the boundaries between spiritual and secular space blur. It is not merely a showcase of completed projects but also an insight into the way the architect thinks about space, light, materials, and people.
The ruins of St. Catherine’s Church in Ostrava-Hrabová served as the inspiration for his creative approach. It was here that he defined the three principles that continue to permeate his work to this day—the body as a tactile measure of humanity, light as a medium that breathes life into space, and silence as a purity that allows one to perceive an inner order.
The exhibition will present a variety of building types, from apartment buildings to churches and chapels. What unites them is an emphasis on the quality of inhabiting space, which brings strength, beauty, and transcendence. The centerpiece of the exhibition is a model of the Malé Lauby apartment complex, which brings a new order and quality of everyday living to the historic center of Ostrava.
