URBAN YOUTH – a project focused on the needs of Gen Z in the public space of Brno

Urban Youth is a pilot project focused on the needs of Gen Z in the public space of the city of Brno.

Since October, the Urban Youth project has been bringing a series of public workshops and debates that give the young generation the space to formulate their own needs, experiences and visions of the future city. At irregular intervals, participants from Gen Z, students of the Faculty of Arts of the Brno University of Technology and the public meet in various locations in Brno. Together, they map the city's public space and, using various methods and tasks, explore how to better adapt it to their needs.

The opening debate in Vesna introduced the topics of placemaking, temporary activation of places through artistic interventions and described barriers in cities. The follow-up workshop in SPOT sparked sensitive discussions about safety, accessibility, and personal experiences of young people with urban spaces. The November interventions focused on a neglected part of the city centre, the shortest street in the city – Pohořelec. They brought a combination of mapping, observation and creative methods. The result was a temporary art installation of a palm tree and a design for multifunctional furniture, which later appeared at the Brno Bold conference in front of the SONO club.  Both interventions showed how even a small intervention can transform the atmosphere of a place and open a conversation about its possible futures.

The project also included a public debate, the Urban Forum, as part of the Brno Creative Days, which connected experts in architecture, sociology, gender studies, fine arts, and youth work with the project participants – and offered a comprehensive discussion on how the city works with the needs of young residents.

And what awaits us next? From January, the project enters the design-build phase. Workshop participants, together with experts and external partners, will transfer their previous knowledge into the design and implementation of a specific installation in the public space of Brno. The emphasis will be on sustainability, upcycling of materials, and the development of new methods of artistic research that naturally connect the academic environment with the real city and its inhabitants.
Join one of the other workshops and get involved in a project that connects architecture, design, art and everyday activities in the city. See you on Thursday, December 11th, at 4:00 PM (location to be confirmed).

The Archipop studio organizes the project. The project is co-financed by the European Union. It is being implemented with the financial support of the statutory city of Brno, under the auspices of the Mayor of Brno and the Governor of the South Moravian Region. The project partners are the Faculty of Architecture, Brno University of Technology, the Faculty of Education, MUNI and Vesna.
