from FA VUT can work on Bruntal themes as a regular semester work. Foreign
students interested in presented themes can take part to a one-week
workshop in spring 2004, in Bruntal (approx. first half of May). During
the workshop, detailed background on the problems will be given along with
the opportunity of taking part in forums, discussions, and lectures.
Workshop outcomes will be presented in public. They are expected to
initiate inspiration for any kind of discussion about the future of
Bruntal. Students' work could be also part of the regular semester study

Facts: The town Bruntal is situated in the northeaster part of the Czech Republic in the Moravia – Silesian Area. It is 250 km remote from Prague, from the regional town Ostrava 70km and 20km from the Polish border. It´s area is 3,016 ha, the number of inhabitants 17, 628 to 1.1.2003. The town lies in the height 547m above sea level in the western part of the Nizky Jesenik Range. An extinct quatemary volcano Uhlirsky vrch (672 above sea level.) is a marked view point in the eastern part of the town. The town Bruntal is a III. type town with an extended activity on 33 communities. Bruntal
is probably one of the oldest towns in the area of the Czech Republic, it
was founded in 1213 as the first settlement with the Magdeburg Right. The
historical town centre including the Castle area was declared the town
historical reservation. The pride of the town and the sought after aim of
the tourists is the Castle from the 16th century with a beautiful park,
the terraces of the salla terena and a lot of sculptures. The parish
church of the Virgin Mary Ascension, the Gabriel´s House, the Community
House, St. Michael’s Chapel, the Protestant (Evangelical) Church, the
complex of the Church of Virgin Mary the Soother, the pilgrimage church of
Virgin Mary belong to other sights of the town. The
Town Theatre, the cinema Centrum, the exhibition halls in the Castle, the
Gallery in the Chapel offer cultural realisation. The activities of the
Club for Old Bruntál, concerts of classical music in the Club of the
Music Friends, jazz concerts in the Africa Pub, the performances of folk
groups are regular cultural activities. Bruntal
offers various sport activities. In winter it is the ski lift and the
cross-country routes on Uhlirsky vrch and the town ice ring. The fans of
swimming can use the swimming hall and the town bathing place in summer.
The sport centre with bowling, squash and ninepins, the hall lending
office for go-karts, tennis courts, the table tennis hall, skatepark, the
sport hall offer another possibilities. One of the biggest water dams in
the Czech Republic Slezska Harta offers a new holiday area, one of its
branch is only 5km distant from Bruntal. Another three extinct volcanoes
are situated in its vicinity. The tourist and cyclotourist trails insure
the linking if these activities with the town. Bruntal is the southeaster
gate to the Jeseniky Mountains, it is visited by tourists pointing to the
highest peak of Moravia – Praded and to the neighbouring ski centres. The
greatest business subjects in Bruntal are: the producer of traditional
flax and mixture yams Moravolen, the specialised plastic and toolmaking
company Alfa Plastic, company Osram concerning with the production of
wolfram, food producing companies as Jesenicke mlekarny (milk factory) and
Limova (produces soft drinks), next the assembly companies Linast and
Gardena. 9 accommodation capacities and about 40 gastronomy plants offer
their services. 4
state and 1 private schools, 2 apprentice schools, 2 vocational high
school and 2 grammar schools presented education. The
hospital and a lot of private doctors insure the health service. Bruntal is connected with the high way 1/11 Ostrava-Opava-Sumperk and 1/45 Olomouc-Bruntal-Krnov. Bruntal lies on the railway Olomouc-Bruntál-Krnov, the local railway leads from Bruntal to Mala Moravka. |
