NERMINA ZAGORA: Architectural education and practice in the (post) transitional context of the city of Sarajevo
The echo of the socio-cultural, political and economic transitions that have occurred throughout the complex history of the city of Sarajevo is still present in the contemporary architectural education and practice. Transitions can be regarded as opportunities for introspection, re-evaluation and fresh start. On the other hand, the burden of history and socio-economic reality can sometimes hinder the improvement of the status quo, both in everyday reality and in the contemporary architecture scene. This lecture will focus on the possibilities of change, if the mentioned challenges are addressed at the micro level. Following the insight into the historical background, curriculum, identity and contemporary reality of the Faculty of architecture University of Sarajevo, the lecture will present two case studies, one in the domain of architectural education and the other in the sphere of professional practice. Firstly, the described approach will be illustrated by the presentation of the effects of micro enhancements in teaching methodology in the courses of the Department for interior design at the Faculty of architecture University of Sarajevo. Moreover, the impact of the approach of micro interventions will be shown in the case of projects of public staircases in Sarajevo, as a part of the strategy of urban acupuncture.
IGOR KUVAČ is professional associate in teaching at the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy, University of Banja Luka (Bosnia and Herzegovina) at the Bachelor and Master courses of Architectural design and Urban planning. He is one of founders and CEO of the Centre for Spatial Research in which currently coordinates the HERIT-DATA (Interreg MED) project, small SCALE project as well as program of the Days of architecture - Banja Luka. Igor is engaged in the processes of urban planning with the focus on increasing collective conscious about spatial potentials and planning culture in Bosnia and Herzegovina through activist-design approach. He researches processes of creating architecture, as well as cultural context on the urban transformation of contemporary cities, focusing both on urban and anthropological themes. The mutual correlation between cultural identity and social production of urban space is observed as continuous, dynamic and never ending process. He graduated and obtained Master’s degree at the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy, University of Banja Luka (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and doctoral degree from the University of Granada (Spain). Igor's PhD thesis researchs the war and post-war context of divided Bosnia and Herzegovina and its influence of people's lives and the structure of the territory. Ethnic divisions, population exchange, restructuring of socio-political, economic and cultural system, as well as the construction of new urban typologies are defined as the process of transition of spatial identities. The focus is on the migration dynamics of internally displaced persons, resulting in the patterns of new urban neighborhoods and new coordinates of everyday life. The phenomenon is investigated at the neighbourhood, village and the city scales, through the lenses of formal–informal, and personal–general.
IGOR KUVAČ: Localy problem based small scale project approach in learning architecture
Education of architects is confronted with a vast number of challenges as globalisation, neoliberalism, artificial intelligence, unemployment increase, lack of relevance to name only a few. All this is pushing need for a profession changing at an ever-faster rate by following global trends, dynamics of contemporary space and the process of time-space compression. The questions is 'how should architecture education be approached from this perspective'. This especially emerge in the vulnerable contexts as Bosnian and Herzegovinian is, still passing through post-war recovery and never-ending process of transition. In addition to formal education in schools and faculties, very much traditional in its forms of teaching, future architects do not establish relation to the practice and the context of wider economic and social realities. On the other hand, the responsibility of architects to change social and professional realities is very important. The complexity of the problem requires a transdisciplinary approach, so that spatial processes lead by architects not only affect the actors involved but also the wider community. Contrary to 'globalization of architecture', which is a phenomenon almost contradictory to the essential dimension of architecture, it should be approach from local problem based perspective. In that sense, architecture learning should be physically grounded in the reality, by preparing the students to learn about the forces shape the environment, physically as well as socially and politically. This is achieved by learning through process of planning, designing and building in real-life conditions, which is an effective approach for understanding the multiple roles of architecture, urban planning and urban development that go beyond mere "design". Within the framework of qualitative analysis, a small-scale project based has been analyzed as an example of good practice and transdisciplinary approach in teaching architects. It opened discussion on this concept and mechanisms dealing within community based approach in the system of education.
