LONDON 2012 OLYMPICS: TRANSFORMATION AND LEGACY This summer London has captured imagination of millions of people across the world. While temporary in its function as host of the Olympic Games, the Olympic Park has the ambition to bring a lasting legacy for this long deprived area of East London, with anticipated investment trickling off to the neighbouring communities. We will examine the role of architecture and architects in shaping this legacy not only by looking at planning and delivery of the physical park and venues, but more importantly by studying the underlying psychological transformation – acting upon our individual and collective right in making the city.
PETRA HAVELSKÁ is a London-based architect working on the interface of architecture and development. Her interest in becoming enabler of good quality built environment and mediator between architecture and other professions led her to complete an MA in Creative Entrepreneurship (Goldsmiths, University of London), complementing her architecture education (MA, Vienna University of Technology) with an understanding of business and communication. Her book of dialogues exploring the future role of the architect – TOGETHER ALONE. Architecture and Collaboration – was published in 2011 (Artistbooks, UK).
Petra moved to London in 2006, joining the practice of John McAslan & Partners, where she gained experience in large-scale building and masterplanning projects, including the Olympic Energy Centres for London 2012 Olympics. Her interest in public space led her to several collaborations with Igor Marko (FoRM Associates), including the winning proposal for urban landscaping in Kiev and Trafford Wharf Promenade – the first completed section of Irwell River Park in Manchester.
Since 2010 Petra acts as Design Manager for the start-up housing brand Solidspace. As an advocate of entrepreneurship within the architecture profession, she is an active contributor to on-going initiatives concerning development of cities. For this year’s London Festival of Architecture, Petra curated and coordinated the Ovaltown ‘Zone of Tolerance’ Urban Design Charette. She recently became an advisor to Urban Transcripts, a platform for the advancement of multidisciplinary knowledge on the city.
